Our Roots

Alpha Omega Sorority was founded on 27 October 1993, at Wilfrid Laurier University by eight women who shared a bold vision: to create a female fraternity rooted in friendship, individuality, and sisterhood. The idea was first sparked on 21 September 1993, by Pam Jones and Elaine Ho. These two women were close friends and roommates in first year, inspired by the supportive bonds they saw in existing fraternities on campus. Wanting to build something of their own, they teamed up with fellow students Jennifer Appleby, Monique Lowe, Kerry Dyer, Myka Reynolds, Jennifer Dumoulin, and Amy Hopkins to bring their vision to life.

On 2 October 1993, the first group meeting took place where five of the women (Pam Jones, Elaine Ho, Jennifer Dumoulin, Monique Lowe, and Kerry Dyer) met to discuss the possibility of starting their own female fraternity. Approximately three weeks later, on 21 October 1993, there was second group meeting where two other women (Jennifer Applebee and Myka Reynolds) were introduced. This meeting was an informal gathering in which the seven ladies got to know each other better. On 26 October 1993, Pam Jones and Jennifer Appleby met with members of a University of Waterloo sorority to gain insights and guidance on the process of developing their own organization. Finally, on 27 October 1993, the first official meeting of Alpha Omega Sorority took place. It was here that Amy Hopkins was introduced to the group, making her the eight and final founder. At this meeting, the eight founders established the sorority name, colours, executive positions, and symbols.

It was through these meetings that Alpha Omega’s foundation was shaped. Drawing on their diverse strengths and shared values, these eight women designed an organization that would welcome all women, celebrate differences, and foster deep connections that would last far beyond university life.

Founder's Day

Every year on our founding date (27 October), we come together and honour the eight women who created Alpha Omega. This year, we are celebrating 32 years of sisterhood at Laurier. Our Founder's Day is not only a celebration of the current sisterhood, but also of every group of remarkable young women who came before us. Women whose kindness, strength, and dedication have built the loving, empowering community we are so proud to be part of today.
